DAYA SADAN

The sisters went to Dharavi in 1962, one of the Mumbai’s worst slums considered to be Asia’s largest slum. All sorts of people lived in Dharavi, liked the simple fisher folk, who were the original inhabitants and migrants, who came in search of job. The place inhabited the drunkards, smugglers and other people. Misery, starvation, poverty, illiteracy, ill health and immortality of the people drew the attention of Mother Anna Huberta to Dharavi.

Initially the sisters lived in a small room, right in the middle of the slum. In this same tiny room they collected women for evening classes and gathered children for regular studies.

A dispensary was open in 1963 in the presence of Mother Anna Huberta to care for the sick. A maternity ward was added to this dispensary in 1969. Sisters also conducted educational programs for children and adults, setting Balwadis, coaching classes and women’s groups etc.

As per the need of the people, presently sisters are involved in Social, Medical and non-formal educational activities. The social activities are extended to two sub-centres at Dhorwada and second at Kalakilla- Dharavi.
